Do I qualify for LASIK?
To determine if you are a good candidate for New York or New Jersey LASIK surgery, or any other form of vision correction surgery, you need to have a screening exam with a professional at one of our 5th Avenue Eye Center offices.
During this visit, which typically takes about 30-45 minutes, you will undergo special tests to determine if you qualify for LASIK laser vision correction surgery and what will be the safest and the most effective procedure for you. The screening process for LASIK surgery is virtually painless, and you can rest assured that you’re in expert hands with our professional staff.
Who is NOT a candidate for LASIK surgery?
Millions of people around the world have successfully undergone LASIK surgery to correct their vision. Although countless men and women are ideal candidates for LASIK surgery, there are some people who do not qualify for the procedure due to certain medical exclusions. Some of those things are:
- You must be at least 18 years of age (to ensure that the eyes have fully developed and matured)
- Your vision must be stable, infection-free and injury-free for one year prior to surgery
- You must not have a history of severe dry eye syndrome, herpes eye infections, cornea scarring or an autoimmune disorder such as Lupus or Sjogren’s Syndrome.
- You cannot be pregnant or nursing on the day of surgery.
- You cannot have a large prescription, thin corneas or irregular topography (eye surface map). In these cases, other surgical options, such as Implantable Contact Lens or Clear Lensectomy/Clear Lens Exchange (CLE) can be explored.
Our surgeon, Dr. Ilan Cohen, will work with you to determine if you qualify for LASIK surgery. He is a respected, fellowship-trained cornea and refractive surgeon with more than 10 years of experience in the field and over 10,000 LASIK procedures. He will evaluate your LASIK surgery candidacy quickly and efficiently. If you are not a LASIK surgery candidate, you may still be an excellent candidate for other procedures, which will be presented to you at the time of your screening.
What If I’m Not a Candidate for LASIK Surgery?
Unfortunately, LASIK surgery is not for everyone; however, you may be a candidate for a different procedure. Some of the alternatives include: Implantable Contact Lens, Clear Lensectomy, PRK or perhaps no surgery at all. Only a comprehensive screening exam can determine what will work best for you.
